Retail premises, offices and cold stores can have similar annual consumption and very different demand timing. Collect monthly bills and, where available, interval data. Identify weekends, closures and seasonal loads separately. Annual generation equal to annual consumption does not establish that all generated electricity will be used on site.
Clarify rights and responsibilities
For leased premises or shared roofs, record who can authorise installation, how long the site can be used, and who is responsible for roof repair and insurance coordination. Separate the building owner’s decisions from the electricity account holder’s decisions. Resolve access to meters, switchboards and communications before agreeing the work scope.
Protect business continuity
Record delivery access, customer areas, opening hours and acceptable shutdown windows. An installation plan should account for routine building maintenance and future access to rooftop equipment. Ask the proposed contractor to explain how these constraints affect the programme and what needs to be completed before mobilisation.
Request comparable proposals
Use the same consumption baseline, roof information and operating assumptions for every bidder. Compare capacity, scope, equipment, production method and exclusions together. Treat any savings calculation as a scenario until the tariff, demand overlap, operating costs and applicable treatment of surplus energy have been checked.
