A power rating in kW describes how much electrical power a system can deliver at a given moment, subject to its operating limits. Starting motors and short peaks may require separate assessment. A large energy capacity does not necessarily mean a system can supply every load simultaneously.
Energy describes an amount over time
Capacity in kWh relates to stored energy. A simple division by load power gives an ideal duration, but usable capacity, conversion losses, temperature and reserve settings change real operation. Nameplate energy should not be presented as guaranteed usable backup energy.
Define the operating priority
Backup, self-consumption and peak shaving can compete for the same battery capacity. Keeping a reserve for outages may reduce the energy available for daily optimisation. The control strategy needs to reflect the customer’s priorities and the installation’s technical limits.
Prepare a storage enquiry
Provide an interval load profile, critical-load list, required backup duration, existing PV and inverter information, available space and environmental conditions. Product compatibility and safety need qualified review; selecting a battery solely from its advertised kWh rating is insufficient.
